Titel:The International Shadow Project 1985

Samenvatting: During the night, shadows of human beings engaged in various activities were scattered throughout the city. These ghost-like forms simulate the destruction of human life by the detonation of a nuclear bomb. As a way of commemorating the first nuclear holocaust in Japan forty years ago, many artists and concerned citizens followed a carefully planned scenario designed to produce images similar to the human shadows imprinted by the intense heat of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Innocent victims who were within 300 metres of ground zero were instantly vaporized, leaving behind only their shadows on the mads and buildings. Unlike nuclear war, the shadows painted on the streets of this city will not permanently after the urban landscape. Many people today are unable or unwilling to envision and respond to the real potential of nuclear annihilation. Consequently the International Shadow Project was planned to help people to imagine what would be left of human life after a nuclear catastrophe. The full-size human shadows are intended to allow all who view them to identify personally with victims of atomic war. We hope that when people begin to visualize and comprehend the grim consequences of our arms build-up, they will take action to prevent our collective disintegration.
