Titel:Nagasaki 1945
Auteur: Tatsuichiro Akizuki
Samenvatting: On the morning of 7 August 1945 Dr Tatsuichiro Akizuki read the newspaper headline: "New kind of bomb on Hiroshima - much damage done". Two days later, at precisely 11:02 a.m., Dr. Akizuki witnessed the effects of the new bomb himself. 'Fat man', the second atomic bomb to be dropped on Japan and originally intended for Kokura, had exploded over Nagasaki. In the chaos that followed the explosion, Dr. Akizuki tended the sick and dying in the burnt-out remains of his hospital with little food or bedding and virtually no medical supplies. As the days wore on and people who were not visibly injured died in their thousands, the full extent of the holocaust began to be realized. Fighting a disease which he could not identify, in a building with no roof or windows. Dr. Akizuki tirelessly tended nearly 200 serious-ill patients. Today Dr. Akizuki still works in that hospital. He has observed the rebuilding of Nagasaki but still vividly remembers the events of that day. His powerful and moving account of the terrible destruction wrought by 'Fat Man' is particularly relevant today as concern over nuclear power mounts. His story is a salutary warning to us all.
