| Samenvatting: | From the Prologue: The nuclear arms race is out of control. Nuclear weapons of unimaginable destuctiveness and great accuracy are being produced in ever greater numbers. The technology that governs their use is passing out of human hands. The probability of nuclear war is growing. An unlimited nuclear exchange - there is little likelihood that it would remain limited - would be a catastrophe of such proportions as to destroy civilization as we know it. We witness at this moment in history a growing moral revulsion against nuclear weapons, led by responsible citizens, including clergymen and doctors. Physicians in all countries are committed to the preservation of life. The extent of death and suffering that a nuclear wat would cause and the kwowledge that there is no effective medical response once an attack has taken place are forcing doctors all over the world to become active in efforts to prevent such a war. Together we can, we must, rid humankind of this intolerable danger.  |
