Titel:Sisters in Affliction
Auteur: Raqiya Haji Dualeh Abdalla
Samenvatting: Sisters in Affliction is the first book by a women from the Horn of Africa to deal with female circumcision and infibulation. This widespread practice is one which more and more women in Africa are discussing publicly, criticising and campaigning against. Raqiya Dualeh examines the origins and incidence of the practice in Africa and other parts of the world generally, as well as focussing on Somalia. She describes the different types of operation involved and their physical and psychological effects and complications, as well as the ideological rational for the costum, including the manipulation of religious teachings, and its economics aspect. The originality of the book lies in both its community study - which reveals an interesting range of attitudes on the part of both women and men - and its commitment. Raqiya Dualeh in fact concludes her book with recommendations for educational and other action that African governments some of which are already becoming concerned, could take in this field. Raqiya Haji Dualeh Abdalla is currently Director of Culture in the Somalia Ministry of Culture and Higher Education. She conducted the field research for this book in Somalia and wrote it up during the year she spent at the Institute of Social Studies at the Hagua. Among her many activities, she has published a book in Somali on child health and the responsibility of mothers.
