Titel:The Rapid Deployment Force
Auteur: Jeffrey Record, e.a.
Samenvatting: The Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) formed by the Carter Administration in the wake of the Sovied invasion of Afghanistan is incapable of fulling its principal mission: the preservation of the U.S. access to the vital energy resource of the Persian Gulf. Plagued by a host of conceptual, structural, logistical, and organizational weaknesses - including intense inter-service rivalry for "ownership" of the rapid deployment mission - the RDF must be substantially altered if it is to become a convincing and effective instrument of American military power in the Gulf region. In this Report, the author analyzes the deficiencies of the present PDF in the context of the inherent obstacles to successful military intervention in that logistically remote region in the world. He then proceeds to outline an alternative vehicle for deterrence and defence in the Gulf.
